#Pub 100: Turf Tavern, Bloxwich (also known as Tinky’s)

The final pub on this tour and a classic to finish with. A real throwback to the 1930’s but according to this site, dates back to 1875. It serves excellent real ale, has no TV’s or jukeboxes (and you can’t take photos) and is great for a chat and a beer. A real haven for […]

Christmas and all that

Well that all over for another year although Christmas has been rather frenetic to be honest. It’s funny how you view Christmas as you get older. When I was younger it was all presents and games. As I’ve got older it’s parties and games. And as I’m even older it’s socialising and games. And that’s […]

#Pub 99: Jekyll & Hyde, Steelhouse Lane Birmingham

Near the police station in Steelhouse Lane  and also a gin parlour and another good pub! It was so warm we sat outside at 6pm in December! Bit scruffy and very busy but good choice of beer and very pleasant. 4/5

#Pub 98: The Shakespeare, Summer Row, Birmingham

Sister pub of the OC’s and another classic for all the reasons the OC’s is. Well worth the walk to find it near UCB and the library. I love this pub and lots of other people do as well. 5/5

#Pub 97: Queens Head, Birmingham

It was amazing how many people were on a tour such as ours as we ran into a load of people who were just “on tour” and we spent a fair amount of time comparing notes. Bit pretentious but a good pub non the less and had a speciality for sausage. 4/5 for the hipsters.

#Pub 96: Old Royal, Birmingham

Could have been a classic if nit buggered about with by Greene King. 3/5 as despite good décor, protest drink taken by me (Sparkling Mineral Water).

#Pub 95: The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham

IMHO this is Birmingham’s best pub! We were spoilt on this day as this pub is as close to nirvana as you get. It’s got everything; murals to the fallen of WWI, great beer, great architecture and clean atmospheric pub just round the corner from Snow Hill Station. I love this pub and I don’t […]

#Pub 94: The Bartons Arms

This is the real doyen of Birmingham Victorian architectural-wise. It’s also supposed to be a real ale haunt but I couldn’t find anything I really liked. And JC argued for ever it was more of a Thai restaurant than a pub but we had to correct him there. Disappointed on the beer but too classic […]

#Pub 93: The Wheatsheaf, Walsall

Some mixed feelings here as people couldn’t decide if it was a classic pub or if the recent makeover had ruined it. Clean, real ale and live music and a pub cat made it an easy 4/5. I’d be in here more often if I lived locally.

#Pub 92: Peaky Blinders, Birmingham

Oh dear. As this website says, it’s a novelty pub based around the TV series and is lacking somewhat in many areas such as a decent pint! Some strange notices as well such as “don’t touch the manikins”. I wasn’t impressed despite some of the locals getting in the spirit of the series. 2/5 and […]
